#Coal #KeepItInTheGround

Ripple has worked with the fierce and fearless WildEarth Guardians on a number of campaigns to keep coal in the ground in an effort to slow down climate change.  One of these campaigns involved a lawsuit that the Guardians won against the U.S. Department of the Interior, which illegally approved the expansion of two coal mines in Colorado without taking into consideration the environmental implications.  The smokestacks of the power plant fueled by these mines spew 12,000 tons of smog and haze-forming nitrogen oxide gases annually, equal to the amount released every year from 1.3 million passenger vehicles. The power plant also releases nearly 9 million tons of carbon pollution every year, making it one of the largest single sources of greenhouse gases in Colorado.   Ripple outreached to media in advance of the hearing, and then publicized the victory, which received widespread attention including:  New York Times, Washington Post, Denver Post, Associated Press, NBC National News, Salon, Denver Business Journal, Colorado Independent and Westword.

And here’s an op-ed we placed in US News & World Report on behalf of John Horning, WildEarth Guardians Executive Director.
